Workshops
Music Therapy, Sound Healing and Complexity Science with Barbara Crowe, MT-BC :
Complexity Science, the physics theory of the macroworld, offers a scientific approach that can help explain how and why music is an effective tool for therapy and healing. In this presentation, participants will be introduced to the principles of Complexity Science and shown how music fits the definition of a complex system in motion. Based on this scientific model, the presentation will explore a new theory of music therapy and how the practice of music therapy and sound healing may change and how our research agenda will be altered.
Tomas Winn, MT-BC will present three sessions: Guided Imagery will be an experiential session showing the benefits of this practice in music therapy. Anthroposophical Music Therapy is a discipline that approaches music and its beneficial effects from a point of view based on the work of Rudolf Steiner. Improvisation will be a freeform, rhythmic participatory/instructional experience - bring your instrument or use one provided.
Pythagorean Principles of Music in the Universe with Laurie Riley, CMP: Why does music affect us? Because music is an audible function of the geometry and mathematics with which the universe is constructed, and of which, therefore, the human body and psyche consist. Pythagoras taught these principles in a clandestine academy, Plato furthered the work, and through the ages, secret societies have studied these principles. Now the information is available to everyone. Music’s inherent healing and nurturing properties are a natural outgrowth of its physical/energetic relationship to all existence. This is a richly illustrated presentation using over 30 photographs and charts projected on a screen in sequence throughout the program.
Stella Benson, CMP, CIHP , will present Subtle Energies and Intuitive Listening: This presentation is a look into the recent research of subtle energies, and ways to integrate Intuitive Listing to these soon-to-be measurable phenomena. We will integrate intuitive listening techniques with subtle energy principles to begin mastering a higher level of therapeutic musicianship. Bring your intuition!
Ani Williams will present two workshops: Beautiful Tunings for Harpists will explore the many ways lever (or pedals) can be set to produce unusual and lovely scales and modes for healing music. Ani’s mastering of these tunings will be demonstrated. Sacred Chants of the World will be a participatory session of blissful vocal chants from many cultures.
Living and Playing on an Ocean of Energy with Christina Tourin: Healing modalities are part of our ocean of energies. By relating to the “keyboards” of this vast spectrum, participants will learn how and why sound is so powerful in our lives, and how to bring these energies to your own physical, emotional and spiritual body through the use of musical instruments.
Melinda, RN, CMP will present Therapeutic Musicianship as a Spiritual Practice . How do we integrate our spiritual lives with our clinical music? How is soul expression like the practice of therapeutic music? Melinda will compare the elements of providing therapeutic music to the elements of a spiritual practice.
